about
Bin ikh mit dir broygez—בין איך מיט דיר ברוגז—I Am Mad at You
This traditional song represents two essential elements of the Ashkenazic Jewish wedding, which after World War II were largely lost: baroygez-tants, the ritual dance of quarrel, and sholem-tants, literally ‘a peace dance,’ a ritual reconciliation dance. Both were performed at the wedding by the mekhutenestes, the two mothers of the newlyweds (the exact term is lacking in English). The tune is also known as part of the instrumental Jewish (klezmer) repertoire, used either in the same function as the song or as part of concert programs. Jack M. remembered this song from the weddings he attended at a young age in his hometown of Szydłowiec. This song has been performed relatively widely in the 20th century and by present-day Yiddish singers. The distinct differences of this version are in the first line, “bin ikh mit dir broygez” (I am mad at you), typically sung “bistu mit mir broygez” (you are mad at me), and the second stanza, not found anywhere outside of Jack’s testimony.
lyrics
Bin ikh mit dir broygez,
Vays ikh nisht farvues.
Gey'kh arim a gantsn tug
Arupgelozt der nuz.
Nem dir a zayger,
Du host dortn a vayze,
Anisht, veste nemen di torbe
In gayen in der hayze.
Vilstu mir nisht gleybn,
Az yakh hob dikh nokh lib;
Zoln mir bayde furn
Tsi a gitn yid.
Tsi a gitn yidn
A pidyen im opgebn;
Zol er undz got betn
Oyf a git leybn.
Oy, der giter yid,
Er vet dokh indz bentshn,
Az mir zoln bayde fin hant on
Lebn vi mentshn.
Un az mir veln forn
Tsurik fin gitn yid,
Veln mir bayde ariberfurn
In Zelve afn yarid.
Dort vel ikh dir koyfn
A zayger in a kayt,
In a groyse shayne shtik
Zaydns oyf a klayd.
To zay zhe mer nit broygez
Un grayt oyf gikh tsum tish,
Un zets zikh mit mir esn,
Bakimst fun mir a kish.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
I am angry at you,
And I don’t know why.
I walk around all day
With my nose “hanging down.”
Take a watch,
You have hands there.
And if not, you’ll take the bag
And walk into the house.
You don’t want to believe me
That I still love you?
If that is so, then let us go
Over to the “Good Jew.”
We'll give to the “Pious Jew”
A token of our faith,
So that he can pray for a happy life
For me and for you.
And when we return
From the “Good Jew,”
We will stop by
At the Zelva fair!
At the fair I'll buy you
A watch and a chain,
And a large fine square
Of silk for a dress.
So don't be angry anymore,
And quickly set the table,
And sit right down and eat with me,
You will get from me a kiss.

One of the best new albums of Yiddish and Klezmer music on Bandcamp in my opinion. The collaboration of two sensitive artists of different generations who know a lot about Yiddish and American music.

One of my favourite musical discoveries in a while. These musicians are seriously talented. I can’t help imagining that there would have been a whole significant subculture of Yiddish psych rock like this in a different, kinder universe. For now, this is a window into that world that might have been. And I love every second of it. Audrey
