about
Dzhankoye (the Yiddish name of the North Crimean town of Dzhankoy / Cankoy) first appeared in the 30's (authors unknown, allegedly Itzik Fefer and Moisey Beregovskiy) as a Soviet propaganda song encouraging the Jews to settle in the area and join the agricultural colonies there (Dzhankoy, Kalinindorf, etc.). That came before the idea of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the Far East.
In 2014, following Russia's aggression against Ukraine and annexation of the Crimea, Zisl Slepovitch created the first variant of his original / alternative text to this song. The second / final revision came in 2022, as an immediate response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

ENGLISH:
1. When you go to Sevastopol,
Which isn't far from Simferopol,
You see the occupied land.
As the old song goes,
Every Jew loves to bits
the town of Dzhankoy, dzhan, dzhan, dzhan!
2. Fellows, answer my question:
Where's my brother, where's Abrasha?
His tank is going like a train!
He is fighting for beloved Ukraine
For his grandparents' tombs.
He stands on his eternal Maidan (Freedom place).
May all the enemies know,
All the murderers and hangmen,
That Abrasha is not alone.
Those who love their homeland,
Grab rifles in their right hand,
In tight rows they stand.
REFRAIN.
3. They will fight, they will hope,
They won't run off anywhere,
They don't need Putinland.
The enemies throw bombs and landmines
But Ukraine is still alive,
All people stand united.
Life under occupation
Is neither a holiday nor a vacation.
Abrasha wants to live in his own country.
They will welcome friends and tourists,
Not bandits nor fraudsters
In Dzhankoy, dzhan-dzhan-dzhan.
REFRAIN.

One of the best new albums of Yiddish and Klezmer music on Bandcamp in my opinion. The collaboration of two sensitive artists of different generations who know a lot about Yiddish and American music.

One of my favourite musical discoveries in a while. These musicians are seriously talented. I can’t help imagining that there would have been a whole significant subculture of Yiddish psych rock like this in a different, kinder universe. For now, this is a window into that world that might have been. And I love every second of it. Audrey
