about
Muestra tierra—מואיסטרה טיירה—Our Land
Having grown up in the Greek city of Thessaloniki, Semtov H. spoke both Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) and Greek fluently; later he learned French. According to his testimony, before the war he was involved with the Zionists of Saloniki (an alternative name of the city): “I sang Zionist songs; these songs, in Ladino, which were created in Saloniki. We set up a club in 1935 called ‘Theodor Herzl.’ After the War I continued to be a Zionist, even though I was a true Greek.”
The song itself is a translation of the Hebrew Zionist song of the early 1900s, עוד ארצנו לא אבדה (‘Od artseynu lo avada,’ ‘Our Country Is No Longer Lost’), known under the initials ShLoG, and created by Shmuel-Leib Gordon (1865–1933) in Jaffa. During his first years in Palestine, Gordon composed two songs, ‘Od artseynu…’ and ‘Shavei Tsion.’ The former quickly gained popularity and had been widely performed in the Land of Israel even before it was officially printed. The song was published under the title ‘שיר עם’ (Shir Am, ‘Song of the People,’ or ‘Folk song’), but the footnote framed it as a children’s song. The author and exact date of the Ladino translation is unknown, but it was clearly made before World War II. The arrangement on this album incorporates both versions, in Hebrew and Ladino.

Muestra tierra non es piedrida
i de muevo a mos será.
Muestra nasion non es vensida
i su briyo renasera.
Kuerpo i alma ofriremos al este combate,
Iibertamos, ganaremos el pais [“paez”] resgate.
Vino la ora esperada, Israel su tierra amada,
hoy venimos valorosos, lavorar kon fuerza i gozo.
Muestra tierra non es piedrida
i de muevo a mos será.
Muestra nasion non es vensida
i su briyo renasera.
Our land is not lost
And will be ours again.
Our nation is not vanquished,
And its brilliance will be born again.
Body and soul we offer to this fight
We liberate, we will win and rescue the land.
The awaited hour has come, Israel is our beloved land
Today we come, strong, to work with strength and delight.
Our land is not lost,
And will be ours again.
עוד ארצנו לא אבדה
וכבודנו עוד יגדל;
ולאומיותנו לא נכחדה
ועיזוזה לא חדל.
לב ונפש עוד נקריבה
על מזבח חופשנו;
אור וחופש עוד נשיבה
לנו ולארצנו.
הוי, הוי, בני החייל,
קומו, עיבדו יום ולייל.
עת לעשות לעמנו
ולארצנו ולחופשנו
Od artseynu lo avada
Ukhvodeynu od yidgal;
Uleumioteynu lo nikh’khada
Veyizuza lo khadal.
Lev vanefesh od nakriva
Al mizbakh khofsheynu,
Or vakhofesh od nashiva
Lanu ul’artseynu.
Our country has not been lost yet
And our honor will grow;
And our people did not go extinct
And its movement has not ceased.
Go bring another sacrifice
On the altar of our freedom.
Light and freedom will descend
Upon us and our country.
Oh, oh, the soldiers,
Get up and work all day and night.
Time to work for our people,
For our country and our freedom.

One of the best new albums of Yiddish and Klezmer music on Bandcamp in my opinion. The collaboration of two sensitive artists of different generations who know a lot about Yiddish and American music.

One of my favourite musical discoveries in a while. These musicians are seriously talented. I can’t help imagining that there would have been a whole significant subculture of Yiddish psych rock like this in a different, kinder universe. For now, this is a window into that world that might have been. And I love every second of it. Audrey
