Odom haRishon Nign—אדם הראשון ניגון

We are concluding Volume 3 of Songs from Testimonies with a Hassidic nign that Jack M. remembered from his childhood years in the Polish town of Szydłowiec. The tune hasn’t lost its popularity through to the present, being one of the most beloved and often-sung nign in many Ashkenazic synagogues today. Composed by Rabbi Israel of Modzits around 1900 to the lyrics of Omar Hashem L’Ya’akov (The Lord Said to Jacob), otherwise known under the title Al-tira avdi Ya’akov—“Jacob, My servant, do not fear” (Isaiah 44:2).

Cantor Jeff Warschauer, as part of his ethnographic fieldwork, recorded Joseph Achsen, an old generation ba’al tfíle, who said that in pre-WWII Montreal he had put this tune to the words of B’ney Heikholo (בני היכלא), a Shabbat table song. In our current day, the tune has acquired the name of Odom ha-Rishon Nign—the Nign of Adam / the First Human. Jack performs this song in his inimitably warm yet poignant manner.
